Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Vitamin and mineral supplements can be good for you, but taking too many can be fatal, cautions Hausman (The Calcium Bible, etc.), a nutritionist who presents here exhaustive information detailing safe doses of vitamins and minerals, their benefits and proper place in a diet. Chapters are divided by vitamin and mineral, such as B12and calcium. Hausman cites studies by medical centers and scientific institutes that illustrate the dangers of vitamin/mineral excess and combinations with particular medicines. Snippets of statements by authorities and the author's professorial tone should allay the fears of people who worry about excess and vindicate those who already supplement their diets, as well as convince readers of the importance of the topic. There is more information here than can be digested at a single reading, but the book will serve as a useful reference for lay readers and medical professionals alike. Each chapter contains lists of food that supply the particular vitamin or mineral under discussion, and peppered throughout the book are very good recipes that emphasize the various vitamin/mineral groups. 50,000 ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal

Hausman, a nutritionist who has written several books about diet and nutrition (e.g, The Calcium Bible , LJ 6/15/85), now tells us how to use vitamin and mineral supplements safely. She recommends supplements because many diets are low in valuable nutrients and much of the vitamin content is lost in the process of food manipulation and cooking. The book includes information about the specific role of each vitamin or mineral in the diet, possible interactions with drugs, and stories about supplement misuse. Brand name comparisons for supplements are provided as well as a list of the best natural food sources for each. Recipes are included. Very useful for the depth of information provided in a readable, straightforward manner. Susan E. Holmer, Peninsula Lib. System, San Mateo, Cal.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best vitamin and mineral information book, February 26, 2006
By John Overton (Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been involved with health topics for almost 30 years, and this book is the most comprehensive one that I have seen on vitamins and minerals. The author discusses dozens of vitamins and minerals along with the disease symptoms of too little or too much of a vitamin or mineral. For example, the easiest vitamin to overdose on is Vitamin D, and yet we must have it to maintain strong bones. Patricia tells the overdose limit in her book for this vitamin as well as others. Since many people do not eat right, they can easily become vitamin deficient in some areas, especially as a person gets older and food is not digested as well. The author tells how to recognize vitamin and mineral deficiencies and what to do about it. You'll be glad you bought this book!
